Day 60: Ontario to Unity Lake, OR

Date: 6/20/2015
Time: 4.54pm 6/21
Weather: Super hot
Location: Unity Lake campground

Late post-sorry I didn't have service yesterday. I disappeared from the real world for a good 24 hours.

So, today is day 60. It has been two months since I boarded the 5pm train in  Chicago Union Station. Two months on road, two months of biking, two months of spending time with 27 other people-from strangers to close friends,  or family. Still remember the first few weeks of this ride, I couldn't sleep well at night and I would wake up at 4.30am every day. But now, I always sleep in till the very last minute.

I did not have much sleep yesterday because of soemthing happened. I went to bed at 12.30am, woke up again at 1am, and finally went back to sleep at 1.30am. Corinne woke me up this morning at 6.10am. I was feeling super tired. Like really tired.

I packed my stuffs and was starting to get the trash out since I was on policing. This church has so many trash cans that I lost count of it. There were just too many trash can. And the dumpster was so far away. I was the last one to have breakfast and I was rushing through all morning to get things done.

At the briefing session this morning, Ben introduced us with something that he has been hiding away from us. It's kinda like a tradition of I4K. The 2007 or 2008 team (not sure) found this guy Erick Mosher's ID during the ride and they lost it. So they facebook him and asked if he'd give them his new ID. Surprisingly, he did. So now they started the Mosher game. Basic idea of this was you have to find a way to pass the card to someone else in a sneaky way. What Emmy did to me was she put it in my socks and was saying Jane you left your socks, when I grabbed it, I was Moshered. I did it to Khrystyna-I put it in her green bag and asked if she could pass me "my green bag". She was holding her bag so she was Moshered.

Yesterday was a hard day. It was 83 miles with 4000 feet of climbing and only 2000 feet of downhill. I was glad that I biked with my family. :) There was one big climb shortly before lunch, we had an escort going in front of us. Idk what the exact reason was but I heard that it was because that the hill was dangerous. (?) With only 4.5 hours of sleep, my head was pounding so hard, and I felt like I didn't have energy at all to pedal up those hills.

At about mile 35, Hannah and Haley asked to stop so they can Gu. Sarah gued too. It tastes so weird and I didn't like it. Shortly after the first climb, Hannah said she got heartburn from Gu. How...? We stopped for lunch at mile 45. Then stopped again for water at mile 62 and 72. I didn't like how they said the rest stops will be at mile 60 and 70, but they pushed it backward, especially on hard days like yesterday. It's just so hard to pull through the couple miles cause my brain was shooting for 60/70. I don't  mind at all if they say 65/75 then push it forward to 62/72 though.

We entered the Pacific timezone yesterday. We arrived the campground at about 4pm, but we biked for 8.5 hours. We stopped at mile 79 at a grocery store cause Tony said there was no shelter at the campground and it was too hot out there. This little grocery store sells the best and cheapest ice cream ever. I got myself two root beer float ice cream-vanilla ice cream coated with root beer. We chilled there for about an hour-I actually took a short nap there, then headed to the campground.

When we got there Khrystyna has already set up the tent. <3 I took a nap in the tent despite the flaming hot weather. We had dinner at about 5.30pm. We had two sandwiches for dinner. We were allowed to have only one slice of cheese and one thin slice of ham for each sandwich. All I taste was just lettuce and ketchup. -_-

I took a shower after dinner but the water smells like blood. The bathroom was kinda dark too. I was literally thinking about all of the possible scenarios of people got killed in the bathroom and that freaked me out. Later on I realized that it wasn't just me who realized about the weird taste and smell of the water. The water does taste metally. Someone  google this for me please? How does the water get this weird metal taste? Lack of fluorine?

It started to cool down a little when the sun set. We waited till the sky gets dark then we went out for star gazing. I missed the star gazing night on our last camp day. I was so happy to see the sky lit up with billion of stars although I know nothing about constellation. We saw a couple shooting stars too! They were so pretty! That was the time when Hannah asked a very funny question, " what if we were shooting stars?" Like seriously, Hannah? Shooting stars can't ride a bike okay. Haha :P

We went to bed at about 11pm. It got pretty scary at night listening to the noise made by the bats and/or hawks, and the howling of coyote. Also the campground went into total darkness at night and it's scary to walk alone in the dark. Anyways the star gazing and the sleeping bag slumber party on the road was actually fun and peaceful. You don't get to see the beautiful sky in Chicago city or any big city cause of light pollution.

Someome please bring me for camping again please? But I don't want to bike the day after. I just want to chill and enjoy the camping day. If I ever camp again after this ride, I want to have star gazing all night long, and hike up somewhere for sunrise. Then grab good food for breakfast, and get back to sleep. #perfectplan huh

  1. The blood smell/metal taste could mean the water has higher than usual levels of iron.
